Visiting a coal mine in Svalbard gives you a real look into the island’s history and how Longyearbyen became the community it is today. On a guided tour, you’ll walk through original mining tunnels, wear a helmet and headlamp, and see the tools and equipment miners once used. The guides often have personal experience in the mines and share fascinating stories about life underground in the Arctic.
