Visit the Taubanesentralen, the beating heart of Longyearbyen, which brought coal from the mines to the harbor.
When you arrive in Longyearbyen one of the first things you’ll see is the cable way. The landscape in Longyeardalen and Adventdalen is maked by the long lines of towers connecting the mines to the town. Of these buildings connected to the cableway the Taubanesentralen is by far the most special one. This iconic building was used from 1957 to 1987 and was built on top of the old cable way central. Taubanesentralen on its pillars towers high above the city and is today a characteristic landmark of Longyearbyen.
Join us inside this historical building where time has been standing still since 1987. Feel the conditions the workers had to endure when the temperature inside dropped far beneath zero degrees and the wind went straight through building. At the same time you learn of the important role Taubanesentralen had in the coal production and how it was the beating heart of a well-established system.
From Taubanesentralen we have a wonderful view of the surroundings. We have a view stretching from the beginnings of the Adventfjord, far into the Adventdalen and of course a beautiful view of the city centre of Longyearbyen. We would say the view is worth the visit.
