Summer in Svalbard is unlike anywhere else; mild temperatures, midnight sun, and stunning landscapes. It’s the perfect time to explore glaciers, wildlife, and historical sites while enjoying 24 hours of daylight. During these months, the archipelago comes alive. You can hike across rugged terrain once covered in snow, cruise along icy fjords, or visit old mining settlements that tell stories of Svalbard’s past. Reindeer roam the valleys, birds around, and the calm sea offers a chance to spot seals, walruses, and even whales.
With the sun always up, you have the freedom to explore whenever it suits you, whether that’s a morning glacier hike or a midnight boat trip under the golden sun.
If you’re looking for a summer adventure that’s different from the usual, Svalbard is the place. And to make it easier, we’ve created special Tour + Room Packages to help you get the most out of your stay! You’ll experience a quieter, more peaceful side of the Arctic, without the harsh winter cold, but still with that raw and wild atmosphere Svalbard is known for.

Weather in the summer (June to August)
During summer, the Midnight Sun shines 24/7 – the sun never sets.
Expect mild Arctic conditions: usually between 3°C and 10°C, but sometimes it can feel warmer in the sunshine and colder with the wind.
Weather can change quickly – from sunny skies to rain showers, fog, or strong winds, all in the same day.
What to wear
Dress in layers – it’s the best way to stay comfortable. Even in summer, it can get chilly.
- Comfortable, waterproof hiking boots
- Wool base layers (avoid cotton)
- Wind- and waterproof jacket and pants
- Warm mid-layer (sweater/fleece) for cooler days
- Beanie, buff/neck warmer, gloves (yes, still useful!)
- Sunglasses and sunscreen (the Midnight Sun is strong)
Smart to bring
- Backpack for snacks, water, and extra clothing during your activities
- Reusable water bottle (water in Longyearbyen is clean and drinkable)
- Power bank (batteries drain quickly in the cold and on long tours)
- Camera/binoculars for wildlife and landscape viewing
