Northern Lights Evening at Camp Barentz
with Hurtigruten Svalbard
About the tour
This is the perfect evening activity to mix into your Svalbard program. You’ll leave Longyearbyen behind for a dinner and informal lecture in a cosy, authentic cabin. With some luck, the northern lights make an appearance as well!
A bus will pick you up at the hotel. As we leave town and drive into the large Adventdalen (the ‘Advent Valley’), the anticipation increases. The mountains on both sides of the valley loom over us like giants, hardly visible in the polar night. What awaits at the end of the road?

After a 10–15 minute drive, we arrive at Camp Barentz. This is a small set of cabins, one of which is a copy of the cabin that the discoverer of Svalbard, Willem Barentz, overwintered in on Novaya Zemlya in 1596. We are met by our knowledgeable host for the evening – who also is equipped with polar bear protection, since the cabin is located outside town. In front of a large campfire inside, we get served some drinks, a delicious homemade reindeer bidos and coffee and dessert. Then it is time to learn more about the northern lights. We will sit around the fire, while our host shares information and photographs explaining this incredible phenomenon.
At Camp Barentz, far from the artificial lights in town, you have the perfect conditions for enjoying the northern lights. With some luck, we will round off the evening by watching it with our own eyes in the sky outside. Then the bus comes to pick us up again, and we return to Longyearbyen.

Cancellation/Changes to programme
Hurtigruten Svalbard reserves the right to cancel any travel service due to a force majeure event or other unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances outside of our control. We may also make alterations in the travel services, for example, due to local weather conditions, temperature conditions, ice conditions, risk of avalanche, polar bear sight, pandemics, illness and mechanical or equipment difficulties. We reserve the right to adjust a tour programme with the safety and comfort of participants in mind. Changes may also be made to assist other ships, groups or stranded persons. Reciprocal assistance is common practice in Polar Regions and must be seen as a part of the experience, as long as the main content of the tour is not substantially reduced due to the incident.
