Christmas in Longyearbyen

Christmas in Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost inhabited town, is a truly unique experience, blending the spirit of the season with the awe-inspiring landscape. As our town lies deep within the polar night in December, the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon, making it dark 24/7, only illuminated by street lights, glowing windows, and possibly the northern lights.

The streets of Longyearbyen, lined with cozy homes and shops, are adorned with twinkling Christmas lights, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere despite the cold.

Trips included on the package

The schedule of the trips will depend on their availability.

2-hour sightseeing around town

We drive around Longyearbyen, into Adventdalen and up towards the Global Seed Vault. The guide focuses on what we see and will, in communication with the guests, answer questions, as well as tell about Longyearbyen’s history, from the humble beginnings of the mining era to today’s modern society.

  • There will be stops along the way for photography
  • The trip takes around two hours

Panoramic Hike to Plateau Mountain

Join us for a trip up Platåfjellet (424 meters above sea level), with a great view of Longyearbyen. The tour starts at the cableway central at the foot of Platåfjellet. We go up to the cairn and, if conditions permit, we continue a short distance further onto the plateau.

The walk is sometimes more steep, but still suits most people in average shape. At the top, a beautiful view of the city and the surrounding countryside awaits. In the dark, we use headlamps, unless the moon illuminates our path. If we’re lucky, we’ll experience the magical northern lights.

Dogsledding in the Polar Night

The polar night offers an incredible opportunity to observe the northern lights at any time of day, and a northern lights hunt with polar dogs makes the experience unforgettable. You’ll be picked up from our hostel, and taken to a dog kennel 12 kilometers into the wilderness, where you’ll be provided with warm gear and introduced to dog sledding.

After harnessing the dogs, you’ll head out in pairs, either by sled or dog cart, depending on the snow conditions. In the remote valleys, far from city lights, the chances of seeing the aurora are much higher. After the ride, you’ll return to the kennel for hot drinks, biscuits, and a chance to meet the puppies. The dog sled itself lasts 1 to 1.5 hours.

Northern Lights Safari by snowmobile

Join us on a snowmobile safari through the frozen river delta of Advent Valley to explore “pingos,” natural ice formations known to the Inuits. Leaving behind Longyearbyen’s artificial lights, you’ll glide through the dark, snow-covered landscape illuminated by the moon, stars, and possibly even the Northern Lights.

Snowmobiling is the best way to navigate the Arctic wilderness, offering both excitement and a sense of connection with nature during the Polar Night. Along the way, you’ll pass historical landmarks like Operafjellet, the old airport, and Longyearbyen’s former Northern Lights station, as Svalbard’s darkness creates ideal conditions for spotting the aurora, even during the day.
